SPORTS MEDICINE & ARTHROSCOPY: ROTATOR CUFF
NJ sports medicine surgeon Robert A. Kayal, MD, specializes in the treatment of rotator cuff injuries and conditions, providing patients with arthroscopic rotator cuff repair as well as nonsurgical alternatives. While rotator cuff damage is not limited to athletes, sports-related activities are among the most common causes of shoulder injuries. The physicians at Kayal Orthopaedic Center, PC are experts in treating rotator cuff injuries, and are committed to returning athletes to action quickly and safely.
What is a Rotator Cuff Injury?
The rotator cuff is the group of tendons and muscles that serve to stabilize and move the shoulder joint. Injuries to the rotator cuff can be as minor as reversible tendinitis or as severe as major muscle tears—and may occur through injury or wear and tear. An acute tear may occur when an athlete falls with their arm outstretched, or when they attempt to lift a heavy object with a fast, jerking motion. Degenerative injuries occur over time as the result of structural breakdown within the rotator cuff. In athletics, this degeneration often results from repetitive stress of activities like baseball, tennis, and weightlifting; or from bone spurs rubbing against the patient’s rotator cuff.
The most common symptoms of rotator cuff injuries are:
- Ongoing pain
- Reduced range of motion
- Muscle spasms
- Fluid build-up within the joint
When Dr. Robert A. Kayal and his elite team of orthopedic surgeons see new rotator cuff patients, they diagnose injury severity through physical examination, identification of tenderness, and assessment of range of motion, weakness and deformity. Imaging tests may also used in the diagnostic process, including x-rays and MRIs.
Treatment for Rotator Cuff Injuries
There are several treatment options for rotator cuff injuries, depending upon the patient’s age, activity level, general health and injury type. Nonsurgical treatments include rest, anti-inflammatory medication, physical therapy, and steroid injections. If surgery is required, Kayal Orthopaedic Center surgeons may perform minimally invasive, arthroscopic procedures to limit postoperative pain and scar tissue buildup.
