TREATMENT OF SPINAL DISORDERS: RADICULOPATHY
NJ orthopedist Robert A. Kayal treats radiculopathy with an array of innovative procedures designed to ease the symptoms of spinal disorders. Dr. Kayal offers a complete assessment of the spine and can determine the most effective treatment plan to get you back on your feet, including minimally invasive surgery to reduce scarring and disturbance to surrounding muscle.
What is Radiculopathy?
Radiculopathy is characterized as symptoms of chronic pain caused by compression of the spinal nerve root (usually occurring around the neck or low back). Damage to the cervical spine (neck) creates tingling, numbness or weakness that travel to the arms and fingers, while a “pinched nerve” in the lumbar (lower back) region can lead to pain in the lower extremities. Pinched off nerves are unable to receive adequate blood supply, and may be permanently damaged if left untreated. In addition to trauma and age-related degeneration, spinal disorders such as scoliosis, herniated discs, bone spurs from arthritis may contribute to radiculopathy.
Fortunately, most spinal patients respond well to non-surgical treatments that involve rest, physical therapy, neck bracing and medication. If spinal pain worsens—or is caused by another spinal disorder—a Kayal Orthopaedic surgeon may recommend minimally invasive surgery to free the nerves by opening the passageway where nerves exit the spinal canal. Patients usually experience immediate pain relief after surgery.
